'No News, No Shoes'. De huisfilosofie van het Soneva Kiri Resort op het Thaise eiland Koh Kood is duidelijk. Hier wordt geen televisie gekeken, niet 'geïnternet', en niet verwoed gezocht naar de krant van eergisteren. Zalig relaxen op een hagelwit strand met een steengoed boek en opgeruimde geest, dat mag wel. Het moet. En op blote voeten, welteverstaan, want ook schoenen horen niet thuis in dit kleine paradijsje. Mijn zorgvuldig uitgekozen gouden sandaaltjes en comfy teenslippers blijven dus netjes ingepakt in mijn koffer. Want ik mag dan wel een schoenengek eerste klas zijn, op blote voeten is het leven simpelweg leuker. Zeker hier.
Na een klein etmaal vliegen met topmaatschappij THAI hou ik halt in Bangkok. Daar wacht een Thaise jongeman van Soneva Kiri me op. Strak in het pak, en voorzien van een glimlach van oor tot oor. Ogenblikkelijk neemt hij mijn stevig uit de kluiten gewassen handbagage van me over, en leidt hij me gezwind door de drukke luchthaven. Nadat hij en passant ook nog eens mijn koffer van de band plukt, opper ik een tikje gegeneerd om mijn loodzware bagage zelf achter me aan te rollen. Een verontwaardigde blik is mijn deel. Dit is dan die befaamde Soneva Kiri treatment, denk ik en laat het me uiteindelijk best welgevallen. Dat mijn luchthavenavontuur echter nog maar het topje van de ijsberg was, daar zou ik spoedig achter komen.
Next stop: paradise island
Voor je luxueus mag uitblazen in het Soneva Kiri resort, wacht je eerst een uurtje sightseeing vanuit een laagvliegende cessna. De vlucht is een voorrecht voor Soneva-gasten; aardse stervelingen doen er met de boot een uurtje of vijf langer over. Als ik de lederen zetelbekleding, mini-televisieschermpjes en first class service aan boord aanschouw, bedenk ik me dat de privévlucht van Soneva een uitstekende manier is om mijn laatste restantje vliegangst in stijl te overwinnen. Nóg een kleine bedenking: als het vliegtuigje al luxueuzer is dan mijn eigen woonkamer, wat wacht mij dan op het eiland zelf?
Weg met die schoenen
Als de kleine cessna landt op de private landingsstrook van het resort word ik getrakteerd op het eerste postkaartuitzicht van deze reis. Het water is azuurblauw, en her en der halen enkele sloepen de buit van de dag binnen. Een welkomstcomité zwaait breed glimlachend, als ik en de andere Soneva- gasten een eerste voet op paradijselijke grond zetten. Of we plaats willen nemen in een stel golfcaddies? Graag. We worden naar een steiger gereden, waar een super-de-luxe speedboat ons opwacht. Eens aan boord worden we overladen met vochtige handdoekjes. Al snel volgt dé vraag: “In Soneva Kiri, we have a 'no shoes policy'. Would you mind handing over your shoes?”. Na een initiële twijfel, ontdoet de groep zich van zijn westers schoeisel. De vakantie is begonnen.
Valse noot gezocht
Na tien minuutjes golven trotseren, is onze droombestemming eindelijk in zicht. Welkomstgeschenk? Een tropische plensbui om u tegen te zeggen. Maar dat deert me niet, want ik kijk - tussen de regendruppels door - verbluft rond en besluit: de website- en reisbrochurefoto's hebben er niet om gelogen. Dit oord overtreft elke stoutste verwachting. De architectuur is mooi, smaakvol en in perfecte harmonie met de weelderige junglebegroeiing van het eiland. Soneva Kiri mag dan misschien het meest luxueuze resort van Zuidoost-Azië zijn, verwacht hier geen protserig marmer, verwaand bladgoud en opzichtige bling bling. Eva, de echtgenote van eigenaar Sonu (inderdaad, Soneva is een samentrekking van hun beider namen), neemt met verve de rol van 'bewaakster van de goede smaak' op zich. Elk design, van de luxueuze villa-inkleding tot de houten lepeltjes bij het dessert, is gekeurd door haar alziend oog, waardoor in Soneva Kiri geen enkele valse noot te bespeuren valt. Ook niet als je erg goed zoekt. Eva is ontegensprekelijk fan van natuurlijke materialen. Leder, hout, riet en bamboe voeren dan ook de hoofdtonen in het resort. Bovendien gaat Soneva Kiri prat op een eco-aanpak: geen plastic shampooflesjes of andere wegwerprommel in je villa. Wel schattige, navulbare soapdispensers, ecologisch katoen, houten kammetjes, gerecycleerd water, etc. Niet dat we hiermee de ecologische voetafdruk van de cessna zijn vergeten, maar bon, alle beetjes helpen.
Vrijdag
Een fris theetje later word ik aangesproken door Note, mijn persoonlijke 'Mrs. Friday'. Want op Soneva Kiri horen ze niet graag 'butler', dus kozen Eva en Sono voor 'Vrijdag', net zoals de metgezel van Robinson Crusoe uit de gelijknamige literaire klassieker. 'Fridays' zijn er ieder uur van de dag voor hun gasten. Ze rijden je rond in het resort, begroeten je bij het ontbijt, vergezellen je op uitstappen, en willigen met plezier zowat elk verzoek voor je in. Note rijdt me in een nagelnieuwe golfcaddie door de kronkelwegjes van het resort. Ik waan me even pal in de jungle. Enkel een paar kleine houten wegwijzertjes en bordjes met villanummers verraden dat hier ook nog andere gasten verblijven. Note houdt halt bij nummer 55. Ze parkeert de caddie onder een houten afdakje waar ook nog twee mountainbikes staan opgesteld. Ik krijg de caddiesleutels overhandigd en ontdek dat het karretje mijn 'eigendom' is voor deze week. Handig.
Villa? Zeg maar paleis!
Note gaat me voor en opent de rieten deur die toegang geeft tot mijn villa. Ik sta verstomd. Dit is geen villa, maar een smaakvol luxepaleis uit bamboe en hout. Ik een korte oogopslag spot ik meteen enkele uitnodigend zachte zonnebedden, een buitenzithoek van een twintigtal vierkante meter, espressomachine, minibar en geluidssysteem incluis én een zoetwater infinitypool (met zicht op zee én jungle) dat met een bocht om het terras en mijn villa heen kronkelt. Achter de glazen deur van mijn slaapkamer blijkt het nog hallucinanter te worden: een king size bed, omgeven door een smaakvol wit muggennet, een comfortabele zithoek en een schrijf- en schaaktafel uit kwaliteitsleer. Aan de voet van het bed staat een grote lederen kist, waar een knoert van een flatscreen uit kan worden getoverd. En in een stiekem verborgen kastje zit een iPod, met rustgevende natuurdeuntjes, die je door je hele villa kunt laten weerklinken dankzij een handig soundsystem. Om al dat fraais nog wat beter te kunnen bewonderen, trek ik de zonnewering omhoog. Hal-le-lu-ja. Ik word willens nillens getrakteerd op een panoramisch zicht over de prentkaartblauwe zee en de diepgroene jungle. Het staat vast: hier wil ik vanaf nu elke dag ontwaken.
A toilet with a view
Benieuwd naar wat volgt, gooi ik een tweede stel slaapkamerdeuren open. Tot mijn grote verbazing verbergt mijn villa daarachter ook nog eens een immens binnenplein, met aan aan de linkerkant een bamboehuisje dat een gigantische badkamer blijkt te zijn. Rechts staat een gelijkaardig huisje, waar ik een toilet (met zicht op de plaatselijke fauna en flora, dankzij een glazen wand) en een ruime dressing room in ontdek. Pal tussen de twee 'huisjes' in kun je relaxen in een openluchtbad, mét jetstreams. Douchen doe je onder de openlucht regendouche, of in een douchecabine met glasdallen. Eerlijk... als reisjournalist kom je wel eens op gekke plekken, maar dit is werkelijk the top of the bill.
Fusionfestijn
Note geeft nog even mee dat de dresscode op Soneva Kiri allesbehalve poepstijf is. “Trek je makkelijkste jurkje aan, en laat je schoenen maar achter in je villa”, zegt ze vrolijk. Ik volg haar raad op en rij vol verwachting het kronkelige pad af, tot ik bij het resortrestaurant 'The View' aankom. Ik merk meteen waaraan deze wonderlijke eetplek haar naam te danken heeft, en schuif mijn blote voeten onder een fraai gedekte tafel. Wat volgt is een waar fusionfestijn: lichte mediterrane gerechten met een onmiskenbare Thaise invloed. Bonuspunten voor de keuken! Ook het ontbijt, de volgende ochtend, stelt allesbehalve teleur. Kiezen uit de uitgebreide menukaart is net zo moeilijk als beslissen welk gezond sapje je wil drinken. Ik ga voor 'The Cleanser' en begeef me – vitaminerijker dan ooit – naar het ontbijtbuffet dat opnieuw een perfecte mix van Oost en West in petto heeft.
Relax, take it easy!
Lunchen doe je bij voorkeur op het strand, waar een parmantige rieten beachbar op je wacht. Eet er geroosterde gamba's, een gezonde sandwich of Thaise specialiteiten, en vergeet niet een kokosnootsapje te bestellen. Je krijgt het geserveerd in een ... echte kokosnoot. Paradijsgevoel verzekerd, dus. Na de lunch kun je lekker luieren met zicht op zee in een van de tweepersoons hangbedden, of op een slaapzacht zonnebed op het strand. Nog meer relaxen doe je trouwens in de Six Senses spa, een waar zenoord waar de allerzachtste handen je opwachten. Mocht je daarna tóch nog een greintje stress voelen, kun je altijd een van de mind, body & spirit spa classes uittesten. Bezegel tot slot je dag met een mojito op het strand, met de ondergaande zon als decor, en alle 'aardse beslommeringen' zijn niet meer dan een verre, verre herinnering.
